1174 to 1168 Queen St W | March 2006
Loop Gallery (2000) and Fly Gallery (1999) were early settlers of this stretch, halfway between the Gladstone and Drake hotels. The Fly Gallery was a storefront gallery—small but open 24 hours. Cinnamon Girls Café was a new kid on the block, opened the previous summer.
June 2006:

Edaas was a gallery/store/coffee bar. I have notes that Edaas established 2003 but my photo in the previous post shows a reno and sign going up at the same time as Cinnamon Girls.
In this picture of the complete block from summer of 2007 a sign in the window of Edaas says “Moving to Shanghai”:
Loop has since moved up to Dundas and the Fly Gallery closed its window earlier this year. Cinnamon Girls is still going strong. A series of bars have tried to make a go of it in 1168 since Edaas closed.
The final show at the Fly Gallery, June 2011:
August 2011—The Fly Gallery’s last show is over, 1172 awaits a new tenant. the former Loop Gallery is so closed there isn’t even a door:

“After 12 years Fly Gallery is packing it in. Our mandate has been to keep art accessible and contribute to the cultural life of the street. Since 1999 the development of this stretch of Queen St. has changed the dynamic of that culture. One may call this development ‘Gentrification’. Often associated with negative connotations it is a reality of many urban neighbourhoods. Whether the development is a good or bad thing, it is a factor in why Fly is leaving Queen West. Is this Paradise Lost or a new beginning? The spirit of Fly will live on and we have invited artists to say goodbye with us.”
